Chalet hôtel le Whymper
Ten rooms on a dead-end lane, a short walk from the middle of Chamonix and...
Saas-Almagell is the last village up the Saas Valley, at 1,672 metres, with eighteen four-thousand-metre peaks standing around the head of it. The Loft-Suite Hotel sits on Furusandstrasse, on the quiet side of a place that is already quiet, and it does one thing with unusual conviction: it gives every guest a two-level suite of fifty-five square metres with a private sauna and hot tub. There are no standard rooms to fall back on. That single decision explains the five-star classification, the adults-only rule, and the way the house feels once the door closes behind you.
The private wellness is what decided us, but the reason it works is that the hotel did not stop there. A suite with its own sauna usually signals a house with nothing else to offer; here it is the top layer of an 1,100 square metre spa with a pool, a hot tub, a sauna circuit and a fitness room, all of it included rather than sold on. The second reason is scale. This is a small house in a small village, so the half board is a five-course menu you choose rather than a buffet you queue for, and the staff know which trail is clear.
Saas-Almagell is the southernmost village of the Saas-Fee valley, which makes it the one people drive past on the way to the famous neighbour. That is rather the point. The Furggstalden lift goes up from the village to the Heidbodmen slopes, wide and unhurried, and the same lift is the start of the adventure trail to the Almagelleralp in summer. The Suonen path follows an old irrigation channel down to Saas-Grund. Further up the valley the road ends at the Mattmark dam, and the historic routes over the Monte Moro and Antrona passes begin above it. The valley postbus comes with the room, so a car can stay parked.

The loft wellness suite runs across two floors, with the sleeping level given to a king bed and the living level to a couch, a balcony and the wet rooms. Fifty-five square metres is enough that the sauna and the hot tub are not squeezed into a corner of the bathroom but read as their own part of the suite. A coffee machine, a tea maker and a minibar handle the hours you would rather not go downstairs, and a bathrobe waits by the door for the ones you do.
The 1,100 square metre spa follows traditional Chinese medicine principles, which in practice shows up in the sequence rather than the decor: the order in which you take the pool, the hot tub, the saunas and the resting rooms is laid out for you rather than left to guesswork. The fitness room sits on the same floor. Bikes, hiking gear, Nordic poles and umbrellas are lent at the desk, so the outdoor half of a day needs no planning either.
Dinner is a five-course gourmet menu with choices at each stage rather than a fixed plate, and it comes with the room. Breakfast is hearty and regional, served with sparkling wine every morning, which tells you what kind of holiday the house thinks you are on. Cake and refreshments appear in the afternoon, and a bottle of sparkling wine waits in the suite on arrival.
