What to ask for before you arrive
The gap between a good and an excellent alpine stay is usually made of small adjustments arranged in advance: a room away from the lift machinery, a ski school booking that matches a nervous six-year-old, an early breakfast on the one clear morning of the week, a drying room that is actually warm. Almost all of it is available, and almost none of it happens unless someone asks.
This section covers what alpine hotels can genuinely tailor, how far in advance to ask, and how expectations differ between a family-run house and a large property. It also covers the stays that need the most planning — first-time skiers, three generations travelling together, and anyone staying more than a fortnight.
Where a hotel is particularly good at one of these, we say so in the selection itself: Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany.
