Frequently asked questions
Which Alpine destination is best for a first visit?
If you have never been to the Alps, Zermatt, Grindelwald and Chamonix are the three classic doors in: each pairs an iconic mountain with a well-organised village, and each works in both winter and summer. Our finder above will tell you which of the three fits your style of travel best.
Where should you stay in the Alps in summer?
Summer shifts the balance away from the pure ski resorts. The Dolomites and Val Gardena lead for hiking, Interlaken and Grindelwald for the Bernese Oberland classics, and Lake Como or Lake Maggiore if you want water, gardens and slow lunches rather than trails.
Which part of the Alps is best for families?
Morzine and Grindelwald are our two standing family recommendations: gentle slopes, short transfers, plenty to do off the mountain, and villages that work for early evenings. Wengen adds the charm of a car-free village if your children are past the buggy stage.
Where do you find real nightlife in the Alps?
Verbier and Val Thorens carry the strongest après-ski reputation in the tool, with Chamonix and St. Moritz close behind — St. Moritz trades bar crawls for a more polished, dressed-up evening scene.
Is the recommendation sponsored?
No. The ratings behind this tool are set by our editors and described in our methodology. Destinations cannot pay to appear or to rank higher.
