Prunner Luxury Suites - Adults Only
Our pick in Schenna comes down to arithmetic, but in the other direction from most:...
Dorf Tirol is the shelf of vineyards and orchards that hangs over Merano, close enough that the town is a walk downhill and high enough that the valley haze stays below you. Hotel Patrizia stands on Lutzweg with the whole of that view in front of it. It is a four-star superior house of forty-two rooms, owner-managed by Julia and Florian Spögler, and the scale is the first thing you notice: large enough for a proper spa and a proper kitchen, small enough that the people who own it are the people at the desk.
The house has put its wellness where the view is. The sauna deck occupies the fourth floor rather than a basement, so the Finnish sauna, the bio-sauna and the steam bath all give onto the panorama, and the relaxation room faces Merano. That floor is kept for adults, which resolves the usual tension in a hotel that also welcomes families. Downstairs the garden does the other half of the work, with a heated pool twenty metres long and whirlpools placed for the same outlook. The rooms are finished with an eye for fabric and colour rather than to a chain specification.
Tyrol Castle stands a short walk from the hotel, the seat that gave the whole region its name and now home to the South Tyrolean museum of culture and provincial history. Beyond it, seventy kilometres of marked trails leave the village in every direction, from level orchard paths to the climb toward the Texel group and the Spronser lakes on their high plateau. Merano itself is below, with its promenades and its spa. What the position gives you is a choice each morning between a town day and a mountain day, without moving the car.

Height is the point. Most hotel saunas are placed where the plumbing was easiest, which is why so many of them face a wall. Here the whole circuit has been lifted to the top of the building: Finnish sauna for heat, bio-sauna for those who want it gentler, steam bath, and a panoramic room to lie in afterwards. The floor is adults only, so the quiet is real rather than aspirational, and the view does the work that piped music does elsewhere.
The outdoor pool is long enough to swim properly rather than to stand in, and it is heated, which in this climate stretches its season across most of the year. Around it the garden is planted the way Merano gardens are, with olive trees and hydrangeas that would not survive twenty kilometres up the valley. The whirlpools share the same panorama.
Dinner comes with the room, and the kitchen treats it as gourmet cooking rather than a canteen obligation. The terrace is the place to take it: the house counts more than a hundred and twenty days a year when eating outdoors is the better idea, which tells you as much about Dorf Tirol as any figure on altitude.
